The Leicester Adventure

Report by Annette Beardsley, St Margaret's Epping

St. Margaret’s Epping were the joint lucky winners of the TVCS sponsored trip to the annual BSCC jamboree. Having studied the programme we decided the department would gain more from two people attending for one day rather than one person for two days. The two of us therefore set off into the balmy Sunday evening sunshine.

We reached Leicester after dark which probably didn’t help. Nevertheless, the odd sign might have. But happily we did eventually find our rendezvous point – the halls of residence bar – but things seemed strangely amiss. The place was virtually deserted. OK, the Ghost Walk was in progress and would obviously attract a large following but what was everyone else up to? We settled down to our drinks and waited. All that happened was that the bar closed ‘due to lack of support’. What was the BSCC coming to?

Nothing much happened for the next half hour. The odd soul peered round the door at the closed bar then wandered off in disbelief. Suddenly the peace was shattered by the sounds of approaching voices. The door was thrown open and an exceedingly merry looking group of BSCC stalwarts rolled in. Apparently they had managed to become detached from the Ghost Walk. Something about a vodka café? The barman rushed to re-open the bar and normality returned. The next couple of hours were spent happily catching up with all the cytology news and gossip from up and down the country.

Amazingly everyone was up for breakfast looking bright eyed and bushy tailed (or relatively) and the serious business of the conference got underway. The various lectures and presentations have been admirably reported elsewhere so there remains little to say except that we had plenty to discuss during the journey home.

Thank you TVCS for an informative and enjoyable trip.
