Dr Colin Clelland - Chairman
Since
qualifying as a pathologist in 1986 Colin has held appointments
in numerous pathology laboratories in the UK. In 1988 a grant
from the British Lung Foundation financed a position as Research
Registrar at Papworth Hospital, which fostered an enduring interest
in Cardiopulmonary Histology. Several publications during the
1990s reflected his diagnostic work refining the pathological
diagnosis of lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Throughout his career, participation in clinical research has
been a focus of activity. Current research includes:
'Changes in the composition of the aortic wall of non-pulsatile
circulation in patients with left ventricular assist devices'
- Mr S Westaby, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, John Radcliffe Hospital.
'Cellular changes in the pleural fluid of patients with malignant
pleural effusion treated by chemical pleuradesis' - Dr R Davies,
Respiratory Physician.
Outside normal duties, Colin has been involved in devising national
guidelines as part of a guideline development group - the National
Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) to include guidelines
for "The Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer"
- and the British Thoracic Society's "Guidelines for Radiological
Lung Biopsy". Colin also has experience in workforce
planning, writing business plans and has attended media training.
He Chairs the Cytology Advisory Group for Cervical Screening and
the Departmental Cytology Management Groups.
Currently, Colin is responsible for reporting gynaecological,
respiratory and cardiothoracic histopathology and cytopathology
specimens. He is a member of the Pathology IT Planning Group and
is the Educational Supervisor for one of the trainees in his department.
He was Director of the Oxford Cytology Training School from 2002
- 2004 and oversaw the refurbishment of new accommodation for
the school.
Interests: Sports including sprint triathlon: he has recently
competed in the London, South Coast and Stratford Sprint Triathlon
events. He also enjoys computing, digital still, and digital video
photography.
